George Makgill, 13th Viscount of Oxfuird

George Hubbard Makgill, 13th Viscount of Oxfuird CBE (born January 7, 1934 in Winchester , † January 3, 2003 ) was a Scottish peer and head of the Makgill family.

life and career

He was born the son of Richard James Robert Haldane Makgill and his wife Elizabeth Lyman Hubbard in Winchester and attended St. Peter's School in Cambridge on the North Island of New Zealand and the Wanganui Collegiate School in Wanganui . He grew up in Wellington and studied civil engineering before returning to the UK . In 1955 he entered the military, which he did in the Royal Air Force (GB Brigade). He later left the military and started working at Ford and then at Lansing Bagnall .

He inherited the title of Viscount of Oxfuird and the then associated seat in the House of Lords in 1986 from his uncle. Makgill was Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair of Committees in the House of Lords in 1990. Despite a serious traffic accident and cancer, he remained in this position until his death. He was one of 92 hereditary peers who stayed there in 1999 under the House of Lords Act 1999 . There he was considered a busy and popular member.

He was a member of the Joint Committee for Statutory Instruments, the Hybrid Bills Committee and the Offices Committee. He was also vice chairman of the Association of Conservative Peers .

In 1997 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Makgill died on January 3, 2003 at the age of 68.

Oxfuird was married twice. The first marriage was on February 11, 1967. His first wife, Alison Jensen, gave birth to four sons (including twins), one of whom died two days after birth:

Makgill and his second wife, Venetia Steward, had a son:

The marriage was concluded on August 22, 1980.
