George Munro (philanthropist)

George Munro (born November 12, 1825 in Millbrook , Nova Scotia , † April 23, 1896 in the Catskill Mountains , New York ) was a Canadian publisher and philanthropist .

Munro was born to the farmer John Muro and his wife Mary Mathieson. He had nine siblings. Munro has been married twice. On July 12, 1855, he married Rachael Warren in Halifax . From this marriage a son was born. He married his second wife, Catherine Forrest, on September 14, 1864. With her he had a son and two daughters.

Career

Muro first completed an apprenticeship as a printer before continuing his education by attending the Pictou Academy . After graduating in 1847, he first taught at a school in New Glasgow before he was offered a position as a teacher of mathematics and natural philosophy at the Free Church Academy in Halifax in 1850 . In 1852 he was promoted to rector there. Four years later he left his job, emigrated to the United States and settled in New York City . There he found employment with D. Appleton & Company and made a living trading British magazines and books. After working for various publishing companies , Munro went into business for himself and successfully published magazines and books, building up a considerable fortune.

Munro used his financial success, among other things, to support Dalhousie University to a considerable extent between 1878 and 1885. For example, he founded a chair for physics, one for history and political economy, and one for constitutional and international law . From the latter, Dalhousie University's law faculty evolved. In addition to his money, Munro also made donations in kind in the form of books and specialist journals for the university library. In honor of Munro, Dalhousie University has hosted Munro Day every year since 1881 .

Munro also volunteered as a member of the board of directors at New York University .
