George O. Schanzer
George Oswald Schanzer (born October 26, 1914 in Vienna ; died May 23, 2011 in Buffalo ) was an American Romance scholar and Hispanic scholar of Austrian origin.
life and work
Schanzer was the son of Rudolf Schanzer and Jenny Schanzer geb. Thewett. Both parents were victims of the Holocaust . He had a brother, Walter Ludwig (1908–1995), who was able to flee first to Great Britain and then to the United States in time.
Schanzer received his doctorate in Vienna. jur. He fled to the United States in 1940 after the "Anschluss" of Austria , taught Latin and Greek at Conception Abbey in Missouri until 1942 , then did military service in the US Army (in North Africa and Italy) and in 1945 obtained a master's degree from the university of Missouri in Columbia (Missouri) with the work The Raquel de Toledo matter as a controversial subject in European literature .
Schanzer received his doctorate in 1950 from Iowa State University with the work Vida y obras de Ernesto Herrera (1889-1917). Primer bohemio y segundo dramaturgo del Uruguay and has taught at various universities in the United States, including Hofstra University and St. John's University (New York) . In 1964 he became professor of Spanish and Latin American literature at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York .
