George Paget, 7th Marquess of Anglesey

George Charles Henry Victor Paget, 7th Marquess of Anglesey DL , FSA , FRHistS , FRSL (* October 8, 1922 - July 13, 2013 ), known under the courtesy title of Earl of Uxbridge until 1947 , was a British peer and politician .

life and career

Paget was born to Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey and Lady Victoria Manners. His godparents were George V. and Maria von Teck . He is the brother of Lady Rose McLaren and nephew of Lady Diana Cooper .

He attended Eton College . In the service of the Blues and Royals , he reached the rank of major and served in World War II . Until he inherited the title of father, he carried the courtesy title of Earl of Uxbridge .

In 1960 he was Deputy Lieutenant of Anglesey , Vice-Lieutenant of Anglesey from 1960 to 1983 and Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd from 1983 to 1989 . He is Honorary President of the Crimean War Research Society .

He was also the author of several books. He wrote The Capel Letters 1814-1817 (1955), One Leg: The Life and Letters of 1st Marquess of Anglesey (1961), Sergeant Pearman's Memoirs (1968) and A History of the British Cavalry, Volumes I-VIII . In these he described the history of the British cavalry.

Paget belonged to the Hereditary Peerage Association . He lived in Plas Newydd on Anglesey until his death .

Membership in the House of Lords

After his father's death in 1947, he inherited the title of Marquess of Anglesey and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . There he sat as a crossbencher .

He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 . He had not run for election for any of the remaining seats. He is not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election.

Honors

In 1951 Paget became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA). He was also at the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL).

family

Paget married Elizabeth Shirley Vaughan Morgan (1924-2017) on October 16, 1948 . Together they had five children:

  • Lady Henrietta Charlotte Eiluned Paget (born July 31, 1949)
  • Charles Alexander Vaughan Paget (born November 13, 1950), later 8th Marquess of Anglesey
  • Lady Elizabeth Sophia Rhiannon Paget (born May 14, 1954)
  • Lord Rupert Edward Llewellyn Paget (born July 21, 1957)
  • Lady Amelia Myfanwy Polly Paget (born September 12, 1963)
