George Ramsay, 1st Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie (* after 1570 , † before July 22, 1629 ), was a Scottish nobleman and politician.

Family and career

His exact date of birth is unknown, but he was the eldest son of James Ramsay of Cockpen and his wife Elisabeth Ramsay of Glatty, who married on April 5, 1570. He had a younger brother and a sister. He was still a minor when he inherited their possessions and the position of Chief of Clan Ramsay on the death of his father in November 1580 and his grandfather George Ramsay of Dalhousie in December 1580 . His lands included in particular the parish of Cockpen in Midlothian and the local family seat Dalhousie Castle .

With a marriage contract dated September 22, 1593, he married Margaret Douglas, daughter of George Douglas and his first wife Janet Lindsey. With her he had four sons and two daughters.

On August 19, 1601 Ramsay acquired after the death of relatives other lands and was later than 1603 Knights defeated. In 1617 he took part in the Scottish Parliament as an elected MP for Kincardineshire .

In 1618 his childless relative John Ramsay, 1st Earl of Holderness († 1626) transferred the feudal rule of Melrose in Roxburghshire , whereupon King James VI. elevated him to a Lord of Parliament of the Peerage of Scotland with a document dated August 25, 1618 as Lord Ramsay of Melrose . Since the Earl of Holderness already held an identical Lordship of Parliament, the title was finally renamed Lord Ramsay of Dalhousie with a document dated January 5, 1619 .

When Ramsay died, his eldest son William inherited the title of nobility and was officially confirmed as heir to his lands by a document dated July 22, 1629. This son was also made Earl of Dalhousie by King Charles I in 1633 .
