George Sachs (medic)

George Sachs (born August 26, 1935 in Vienna ) is a physiologist and gastroenterologist at the University of California, Los Angeles .

Life

In 1938 the Sachs' family left Austria and settled in Edinburgh . Sachs graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in medicine in 1960 . From 1961 to 1962 he took up teaching positions at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City . 1962/1963 he was research assistant at Columbia University in New York City. Sachs then went to the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a professor of internal medicine and physiology (1963 Assistant Professor , 1965 Associate Professor , 1970 Full Professor) . In 1974 he also became director of the Institute for Membrane Biology, and in 1979 he became professor for biophysics . In 1980 he earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh. In 1982 Sachs moved to the University of California, Los Angeles, as Professor of Internal Medicine and Physiology and Director of the Center for Ulcer Research . In 1987 Sachs earned an MD from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Act

Sachs' work is an example of research “from the laboratory to the bedside”. Sachs discovered the proton potassium pump in the gastric mucosa and was involved in the development of proton pump inhibitors , which revolutionized the treatment of acid-mediated diseases such as reflux oesophagitis , gastric and duodenal ulcers and virtually abolished surgical therapy for gastric ulcers. Sachs continues to do translational research , studying the pathophysiology of gastric disorders and improving their treatments.
