George Tillman, Jr. (born January 26, 1969 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American director , screenwriter and film producer.

Life

George Tillman studied film and video at Columbia College Chicago. He finished his studies with a degree in 1991. Together with Robert Teitel , he founded the film production company Menagerie Films . He began his career as a screenwriter for the 1992 short film Paula . He first directed the 1995 film Scenes for the Soul , for which he also wrote the screenplay. He produced the film for $ 150,000 and then sold it to Savoy Pictures for $ 1,000,000 . With the resulting profit he financed his third film Soul Food , which was shot in 1996 with Vanessa Williams , Vivica A. Fox and Mekhi Phifer and was released in 1997. Soul Food told the story of an African American family and contained autobiographical elements from Tillman's childhood. The film received several awards, including the 1998 Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture . He then worked on the 2000 film Men of Honor with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert De Niro . The film, which he directed for the first time, told the story of the first African American Navy diver.

From 2000 to 2008 his activity was limited to the production of various film projects, such as the Ice Cubes Barbershop series. His next director was the January 2009 film Notorious BIG , a biographical film about rapper Notorious BIG, who was murdered in Los Angeles in 1997

He is married to actress Marcia Wright , with whom he has one child.
