from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Savoy Pictures Inc. was an American film production company. It existed from 1992 to 1997 and is now part of IAC / InterActiveCorp , one of the largest media companies in the country.

history

founding

In 1992, Victor A. Kaufmann founded Savoy Pictures Incorporated with Vice Chairman Lewis J. Korman. Over the next several years, the company gained notoriety for the films In the Streets of the Bronx , Escape From Absolom , Valley of the Last Warriors, and Serial Mom .

Economic downturn and restructuring

With increasing success, the budgets of the films rose, which Savoy could no longer bear, mainly due to mismanagement. Three years after it was founded, the company was already facing financial difficulties, which was made worse by the production of the unsuccessful films Exit to Eden and Schwer Suspicious .

In January 1995, Kaufmann announced that he would hire Robert N. Fried as the new head of the studios. Fried, in turn, brought in Alan Sokol , Bob Levin , Cathy Schulman , Stan Brooks , Stan Wlodkowski and the film producers Sam Raimi , Bob Teitel , George Tillman , Rob Weiss and Peter Chelsom . In September of that year, Kaufmann stopped investing in film production and restructured the company into a broadcasting company .

Shortly thereafter, Kaufmann signed an agreement with New Line Cinema , which then took over the production and post-production of the company's unfinished films. Among them was the Director - debut of Martin Lawrence A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and movies like American History X , The Adventures of Pinocchio , The Stupids and A Simple Plan .

SF broadcasting and resolution

From 1994 to 1997, Savoy Pictures existed as a joint venture with Fox Broadcasting Company , in a company called SF Broadcasting. WALA-TV in Mobile (Alabama) , WLUK-TV in Green Bay , WVUE in New Orleans and KHON in Honolulu were broadcast with the stations . In 1995 they joined the FOX network and were sold to Silver King Broadcasting in 1997.

Savoy announced in December 1995 that it would be bought by IAC / Interactive Corporation. In 1997 the contract was signed and the Savoy Pictures Incorporation virtually ceased to exist. Today Viktor Kaufmann is vice chairman and board member of IAC.

Current rights

Until the dissolution of Savoy Pictures, Home Box Office took over the distribution of VHS home videos. After 1997, HBO and its subsidiary Warner Bros. Television shared the rights to film and television productions. Focus Features , a Universal Pictures company , has announced a new release of the Savoy film Serial Mom for May 6, 2008.
