General George Wetherall

Sir George Augustus Wetherall , GCB (* 1788 in Penton, Hampshire , England , † April 8, 1868 in Sandhurst , Berkshire , England) was a British general in the British Army .

Life

George Augustus Wetherall, son of General Frederick Augustus Wetherall , completed an officer training at the Royal Military College Sandhurst and entered the British Army in 1803 after graduation. In the following years he served as an officer in the Cape Colony and took part in the British-Dutch War for Java in 1811 . He later served in the Madras presidency in British India and in Lower Canada during the rebellions of 1837 , where he took part, among other things, in the Battle of Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu. After the suppression of the rebellions he stayed in Canada and stayed there until 1854. In 1854 he succeeded General Loftus William Otway as Colonel of the 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment of Foot and held this function until his replacement by General Thomas Wood .

In December 1854 Lieutenant General (Lieutenant General) Wetherall successor Lieutenant General George Cathcart as Adjutant General (Adjutant General) , one of the highest posts in the army, and remained in this use until its replacement by Lieutenant General James Yorke Scarlett in March 1860th For his services he was beaten on February 5, 1856 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". In July 1860, General Wetherall, succeeding Lieutenant General John L. Pennefather as Commanding General ( General Officer Commanding ) of the Northern Command (Northern Command) and had this position, held until July 1865 after which Lieutenant General Sydney Cotton took over his succession. On March 28, 1865 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB).

Most recently, General George Wetherall succeeded Lieutenant General Henry David Jones as Governor of the Royal Military College Sandhurst in August 1866 . He held this office until his death on April 8, 1868 and was then replaced by General Duncan Alexander Cameron .
