George Wood (actor)

George Wood (born December 31, 1919 in Forrest City , Arkansas , † July 24, 2000 in Macon , Georgia ) was an American actor .

Life

George Wood studied at the Yale School of Drama , but had to interrupt his studies because of the Second World War and wrote, produced and played army performances in London . He then completed his training at Carnegie Mellon University . It initially worked mainly in cabaret and musical fold and wrote, among other things, the musical "The King and the Duke", "F. Jasmine Addams ”and“ Scarecrow Richard ”before becoming a character actor. He played theater classics on various major stages, such as the title role in Shakespeare's Julius Cesar in Balboa Park and also at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego .

Wood was only occasionally active as a film and television actor, although he was often mentioned in the credits under the abbreviation G. Wood . He stood several times for director Robert Altman in front of the camera, such as the comedy thing to flying by 1970. In the same year, Wood also played in Altman's film "MASH" the Brigadier General Charlie Hammond , a part he later also in some consequences TV series took over. This made Wood the only actor alongside Timothy Brown and Gary Burghoff who had a role in both Altman's film and the series. Wood's other movies include Harold and Maude (1971) by Hal Ashby ; Let's steal the whole bank (1974) from Gower Champion ; and The Wolf Chases the Pack (1984) by Richard Tuggle .

George Wood died of heart failure in 2000 at the age of 80 .
