Georges Lüdi

Georges Claude Lüdi (born December 18, 1943 in Baden ; resident in Heimiswil ) is a Swiss linguist and Romance scholar .

Life

Georges Lüdi studied Romance Studies and Linguistics at the Universities of Zurich , Madrid and Montpellier from 1963 to 1971 . He received his doctorate in 1971 from the University of Zurich, where he worked as an assistant from 1971 to 1976. In 1976 he completed his habilitation there for Romance Philology and became senior assistant. He also held teaching positions at the University of Bern and the ETH Zurich . In 1979 the University of Neuchâtel appointed him full professor for general linguistics . In 1982 he became a full professor for French linguistics at the University of Basel. Lüdi was the head of the Romance seminar and the Institute for French Linguistics and Literature Studies. In 1994/95 he was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History and from 1996 to 2002 President of the Planning Commission of the University of Basel. From October 1, 2005 to August 31, 2007, Lüdi headed the newly founded Department of Linguistics and Literature. At the beginning of 2010 he retired.

He has chaired the Walther von Wartburg Foundation since 1985, the Board of Trustees (editorial committee) of the Vox Romanica magazine and the Romanica Helvetica book series since 2002 and the Languages ​​and Cultures Foundation since 2008. He was a member of the Science Policy Council for the Social Sciences of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (1994–2011), President of the Swiss Linguistic Society (1990–1994), the Association for Applied Linguistics in Switzerland VALS / ASLA (1995–1998) , 1996–2004 member of the Executive Board of the International Association for Applied Linguistics AILA. In 1997/98 he headed the EDK's group of experts for an overall language concept for primary schools in Switzerland.

In 2006 he was honored by the French President with the appointment of officer in the Ordre national du mérite . On October 30, 2015, he was awarded a doctorate honoris cause by the University of Neuchâtel.
