Georgi Grjasnow

Georgi ( Russian Георгий , secular name Alexander Ivanovich Grjasnow Александр Иванович Грязнов * 26. January 1934 in Bedrin in Kovrov , Vladimir Oblast ; † 1. April 2011 in Kaluga , Kaluga oblast ) was a Russian Orthodox priest, theologian and Archbishop in Chelyabinsk and Zlatoust .

Life

After school, he worked in agriculture and served in the Soviet army before entering the seminary. In 1962 he finished his studies at the Moscow Spiritual Academy . He was ordained deacon on November 26, 1968 and ordained a priest on August 28, 1969 . In 1970 he received his doctorate as a candidate in theology . On April 2, 1972 he became a priest monk named Georgi . In 1973 he was raised to the rank of abbot . Since 1976 he has taught as an associate professor at the Institute of Homiletics at the Moscow Spiritual Academy. In 1978 he was raised to the rank of archimandrite . In 1989 he was appointed the first Vice-Rector of the Moscow Spiritual Academy.

By election of the Holy Synod and the decree of Patriarch Pimen I , Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and Head of the Russian Orthodox Church , he was appointed Bishop of Chelyabinsk and Zlatoust on April 10, 1989 . He was ordained bishop on April 22, 1989. In December 1996, Patriarch Alexius II appointed him bishop of Lyudinowo , auxiliary bishop of Kaluga and Borovsk . On February 25, 2005, he was raised to the rank of archbishop .

He has been honored several times, including the Russian Order of Saint George and the Sergius von Radonezh Order .
