Georgi Kitow ( Bulgarian Георги Китов ; born March 1, 1943 in Dupnitsa , Bulgaria , †  September 14, 2008 in Starosel near Panagyurishte , Bulgaria) was a Bulgarian archaeologist and thracologist .

Georgi Kitow became internationally known for his research on the Thracians . In 2000 he discovered a temple and a tomb from the time of the Thracian ruler Sitalkes I (5th century BC) near Panagjurischte on the upper reaches of the Mariza , north of Pazardzhik in the Sredna Gora Mountains . During a further excavation in the "Valley of the Thracian Kings" several archaeological artefacts made of gold and bronze were discovered. The grave found belonged to the Thracian king Seuthes III. The tomb is located in the vicinity of Shipka , near Kazanlak and was named "Goljama Kosmatka" by Kitov. In 2000 he discovered the Thracian tomb of Alexandrovo near Chaskowo . The tomb contains unique inscriptions from the 4th century BC. The golden mask of another king was discovered near Sliven .

Kitow was controversial in specialist circles. For example, when excavating, he often relied on excavators instead of spades and paintbrushes in order to achieve a faster pace and forestall treasure robbers. In 2001 he was dismissed as head of the Thracian department of the National Archaeological Institute and Museum in Sofia and his excavation license was revoked for one year. On the evening of September 14, 2008, he died of a heart attack at the archaeological site of Starosel .
