Life

In Georgia

Karslidis was born in Zalka , Georgia in 1901 . The names Savvas and Sophia for his parents have been handed down. They had their child baptized in the name of Athanasios , but died very early, so that he was raised by his grandmother. He was a very pious child and prayed a lot. At the age of seven he went on a pilgrimage to the Panagia of Soumela in Sumela Monastery for the first time .

At the age of nine he traveled to Georgia , where he was placed in the care of a priest. Even then he expressed the desire to become a monk and dressed as a novice (δόκιμος). He waited patiently for ten years to receive the tonsure . In July 1919, at the age of 18, he officially became a monk and was given the name Symeon. Soon after, he was ordained a hierodeacon .

During the communist persecution in Georgia, Karslidis and his confreres were arrested as an "enemy of the state" and experienced incarceration, humiliation and torture. He was sentenced to death by shooting and was shot by firing squad, but miraculously survived.

In October 1925 he was ordained a Hieromonk and Confessor by Metropolitan Johannes Tsiaparaski von Grouzia Sceta and renamed Georgios . At that time he already had a reputation for holiness, which attracted many people.

He performed the Divine Liturgy with the greatest care. During the preparation of the gifts he often had perceptions in which God gave him messages about the living and the dead. He used this in a pastoral way for his parishioners.

In Greece

After being expelled and escaped, he found refuge in the village of Taxiarches in Drama in 1929, where he spent the further thirty years of his life.

In 1936 he was able to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land , where he meditated on the life and passion of Christ and visited some monasteries.

In 1938 he received a plot of land of approx. 4,000 m² from a general distribution of land by the government, on which he began to build the later monastery. The monastery was consecrated as early as 1939.

Georgios had foreseen World War II as well as the Greek Civil War . In 1941 he was sentenced to death for the second time in his life by Bulgarian conquerors. He then prayed and calmly asked his captors to do their job, whereupon they became frightened and ran away. Once again he was miraculously saved.

He died a few hours after midnight on November 4, 1959 and was buried behind the Katholikon of his monastery.

The Analipseos Sotiros Monastery (Μονή Αναλήψεως Σωτήρος Ταξιάρχες, dt. Monastery of the Dormition of the Savior)

After his death, the monastery fell into disrepair until 1970, when Metropolitan Dionysios Kyratsos von Drama took care of the restoration and established a sisterhood consecrated to Christ so that monastic life was restored. The monastery was rededicated on April 25, 1971 and officially recognized by the Church of Greece on November 5, 1976 .

Appreciation

The “Venerable Elder and New Confessor” had abilities that are understood as a continuation of Old Testament prophecy . These special charisms are still cultivated in monasticism. A “Geronta” (Starez) is an important authority as a pastor for his confreres and beyond that for the ordinary church members. Levitation during prayer has been known since Saint Luke von Steiris .

Honors

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church also included Karslidis in the Menologion in its session on December 24, 2008 and put the day of remembrance on October 24 (= November 6 according to the Gregorian calendar ).
