Georgios Streit also: Georg von Streit ( Greek Γεώργιος Στρέιτ , born September 25, 1868 in Patras ; †  1948 ) was Greek Foreign Minister and in 1931 the President of the Academy of Athens .

Life

Streit was a descendant of the Franconian-Saxon noble families of Barons von Streit and von Wurmb. His grandfather Johannes Alexander Freiherr von Streit, born on the Medewitzsch manor in Saxony, accompanied the Wittelsbach prince Otto to Greece. His son, the lawyer Stefanos Streit or Stephan von Streit, made a career at the National Bank of Greece , which he headed as governor from 1911. Georg von Streit attended the Royal High School in Leipzig from Easter 1884 to Easter 1887 , which he left with the school leaving certificate. He then studied law in Leipzig , Berlin and Athens. In 1893 he became a lecturer in international law at the Athens Academy , and in 1898 he was appointed professor. At the same time he was an advisor to the Foreign Ministry and from 1910 the Greek ambassador in Vienna .

In January 1914, Streit became Foreign Minister for eight months. He campaigned against Greece's entry into the war on the side of England in World War I , but could only delay it. The proclamation of neutrality meant that England withdrew its offer to cede Cyprus to Greece, because the later entry into the war was no longer of strategic importance.

In 1920 he legitimized his stance by stating that King Constantine had not previously made the necessary preparations for entering the war, so that he was forced to maintain a "neutral" stance. It seems likely that both Queen Sophia of Greece , a sister of Kaiser Wilhelm , and Streit, because of his German origins , felt sympathy for the German Empire and were therefore against Greece entering the war.

From 1929 Streit was a member of the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Streit has written numerous political and legal writings.
