Georgius Rhode (* in Hamm ; † May 24, 1600 ) was a priest and 33rd abbot of the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

In the first year of his tenure in 1598, the following is said to have happened in his monastery: When the Spanish king's troops had taken many cities around the monastery, including Beckum , the abbot sent the administrator and corn master of the monastery there to reach an agreement with the besiegers about the income that Beckum had to pay to the monastery. The Spaniards agreed to the requested grain, but in return asked for some particularly venerated relics . Abbot Rhode discussed with the confreres and had Brother Georg Kock, porter of the monastery, take two head reliquaries from the high altar . When the monk lifted the reliquaries, the blow hit him instantly and he could no longer move.

Abbot Rhode had the reliquaries brought to Rengering Monastery so that the nuns there could beautify the skulls. Then he put the reliquaries in the abbot's chapel near his private apartments. One night the abbot was troubled and saw that the reliquaries were surrounded by a bright light and a bevy of angels . Rhode called his chaplain to see if he could also see this phenomenon; he said no. On the orders of the abbot, the chaplain brought the reliquaries back to the church. Only the abbot could see the light and the angels following the heads.

Brother Georg Kock, who had removed the heads from the high altar, was now completely paralyzed and asked to be able to put the reliquaries in their old place. The abbot granted him this and his confreres led his hands with which he put back the heads. Within a very short time, the brother's limbs revived. Abbot Rhode had the two reliquaries put on a sign that indicates this event. During the inventory of today's Marienfeld high altar at the beginning of the 21st century, these signs were uncovered again.

Georgius Rhode died of the plague at 9 a.m. on May 24, 1600. He was buried in the north wing of the cloister. His gravestone read His life has benefited the place a lot; but his too early death left a lot missing .
