In the Middle Ages, St. George's Chapel was located on the market in the center of the city. It was first mentioned in 1420, but dates from the 14th century. Since they are dedicated to St. Georg was consecrated and the Dukes of Jülich exercised the right of presentation , the chapel is likely to have been built by either the Lords of Bergheim or the Dukes of Jülich. 1542 chapel in the war between Duke was Wilhelm V of Jülich and Emperor Charles V destroyed. In 1550 the citizens rebuilt the chapel with the help of the sovereign. The Georgskapelle was a subsidiary church of the parish church St. Remigius in Bergheimerdorf.

architecture

The chapel is a two-aisled plastered brick building . Presumably there was initially a nave, which was then doubled because of the lack of space. Each nave has a three-sided choir closure and its own gable roof . On the north aisle there is an eight-sided roof turret with a slightly curved hood . The entrance has a simple blue stone frame with the year 1772. The chapel was probably renovated that year. In a niche above the entrance there is a stone figure of St. Nepomuk . When it was repaired in 1959, remains of vault paintings from the time it was built were uncovered. The windows were also replaced on the occasion of this construction work. The lead glass windows were made from boxes by Hans Lünenborg .
