Gerónimo Cardozo

Gerónimo Cardozo (born August 10, 1938 in Villa del Cerro , Montevideo , † March 26, 2016 ) was a Uruguayan military and diplomat .

Cardozo joined the Uruguayan Air Force in 1957 and successfully completed his pilot training in 1960 at the Escuela Militar de Aeronáutica . In 1968 he was raised to the rank of captain. Cardozo , who was part of General Líber Seregni's environment, later achieved the rank of brigadier general in his military career. During the phase of the emerging civil-military dictatorship in Uruguay, he took an opposition, constitutional protection against this movement and was arrested in 1972. He was released on February 9, 1973. In 1976 he had to go into exile in Mexico. From there he took an active part in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in his Uruguayan homeland. As a pilot, he also helped the Sandinista soldiers prepare for the revolution in Nicaragua . After his return from exile in 1985, he initially worked at the side of the later President Tabaré Vázquez as Director of International Relations in the Intendencia of Montevideo . In 1995 he became chief executive of the La República newspaper .

Cardozo, who was friends with Hugo Chávez , was appointed Uruguayan Ambassador to Venezuela on May 24, 2005 as the successor to Julio César Benítez Sáenz, who left office the following day , and held this post until June 22, 2009. During the 2014 presidential election, he headed the advisory team for the eventual winner, Vázquez. From September 22, 2014 to April 1, 2015, he succeeded Ariel Bergamino as the Uruguayan ambassador to Cuba . He was buried in the Cementerio Parque del Recuerdo .
