Geraldo Egídio da Costa Holanda Cavalcanti (born February 6, 1929 in Recife , Pernambuco ) is a Brazilian writer , translator and diplomat .

Life

Geraldo Holanda Cavalcanti was born on February 6, 1929 in Recife. In 1951 he graduated from the Law Faculty of Recife ( Faculdade de Direito do Recife ) from his law degree . Previously he was an intern at the Academy of the International Court of Justice in The Hague .

In 1954 he entered the diplomatic service. In 1956 he was transferred to the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, DC , where he worked as a member of the Commission for the Amendment of the Statutes of the Inter-American Development Bank. In 1964 he was transferred to Moscow as an economic attaché. In 1967 he headed the Instituto Brasileiro do Café in New York . In 1973 he was transferred to the Brazilian embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn as consul, 2nd class , and in 1978 was appointed ambassador to UNESCO . From 1982 to 1986 he was ambassador to Mexico . From 1986 to 1990 he was Brazilian Ambassador to the European Commission in Brussels . He played an important role in the negotiations between the EU and Mercosul to remove trade barriers.

In 1991 he asked for his retirement.

Academia Brasileira de Letras

Geraldo Holanda Cavalcanti was elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras on June 2, 2010 as the 6th owner of seat no. 29 to succeed José Mindlin . On December 5, 2013, he was elected 51st President of the Academia Brasileira de Letras for the 2014 term.
