Dear Jack Foundation
Shortly before the end of the first US tour as headliner in 2005, Andrew McMahon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia , which, thanks to his sister, he was able to overcome with a stem cell transplant . He decided to set up a foundation called the “Dear Jack Foundation” in order to support particularly young people who have been diagnosed with cancer in the fight against blood cancer and to improve their quality of life.
The work of the foundation and the positive social impact were honored in 2008 with the "Good Woodie" of the mtvU Woodie Awards , which gave the Dear Jack Foundation an additional level of awareness.
Others
- The band name Jack's Mannequin is a mixture of the title Dear Jack that Andrew McMahon wrote and the band name that he originally intended for the band, the Black Mannequins . He got this idea while walking around town one day and noticed that there were very few black mannequins (mannequins in English). In order to avoid race and racism issues, he decided against the name and combined his idea with the song name, as Jack rhymed with Black .
- Dear Jack was the first song Andrew wrote outside of Something Corporate . The song is named after the brother of a friend of his, whom he had in childhood. Jack, like Andrew himself, also had leukemia .
- The 2009 Dear Jack DVD is an autobiographical video recording of singer Andrew during the recording of his debut album and his hardest time diagnosed with cancer and life after.
- The band fun. played 2010 as "Supporting Act" for Jack's Mannequin. She herself played in the opening act for The Cure and raised funds for her foundation Dear Jack Foundation.
- A Jack's Mannequin fan app has existed for Windows Phones since 2013 .
