Gerani ( Greek Γεράνι [ ʝɛˈrani ] ( n. Sg. )) Is a local community in the municipality of Nikiforos Fokas in the municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete .

location

Gerani is about 7 kilometers west of Rethymno . The village lies on a north-facing ridge at a height of about 90 meters. To the east of the village runs the Vederi Gorge ( Farangi Vederon Φαράγγι Βεδέρων), to the north along the coast the highway 90 . The nearest town, Atsipopoulo, is about 3.5 kilometers to the east, the coastal settlement of Petres about 3 kilometers to the west.

history

The rural community of Gerani (Κοινότητα Γερανίου Kinotita Geraniou ) existed from 1932 to 1997. The coastal settlement of Petres was recognized in 1991. With the implementation of the community reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, the merger with 13 other rural communities took place to form the community of Nikiforos Fokas (Δήμος Νικηφόρου Φωκά). This in turn was incorporated into the municipality of Rethymno as part of the 2010 administrative reform , where Gerani has had the status of a local community since then.

Attractions

Gerani cave

The Gerani cave is located near the Chania-Rethymno national road at the level of the bridge at the northeast end of the village. It was discovered by chance in 1969 when the national road was being built; the access was created in the course of blasting work for road construction. During the exploration, the original cave entrance could be verified from the inside. It was closed at the end of the late Neolithic. The stratigraphy from the Early Neolithic II to the Late Neolithic is well preserved. Presumably, the cave was only inhabited sporadically in connection with agricultural cultivation, animal husbandry and fishing. The oldest finds are fossils of a herd of the endemic Pleistocene deer species Candiacervus ropalophorus and Megaloceros cretensis . The cave consists of six rooms with a total area of 1200 square meters. Five rooms follow one another, they are mutually separated by large stalactites and stalagmites. The sixth chamber is on the right, parallel to the first; this was the former natural cave entrance.
