Gerard Anthony Unger (born January 22, 1942 in Arnhem ; † November 23, 2018 in Bussum ) was a Dutch graphic designer , type designer , typographer , author and university professor.

life and work

From 1963 to 1967 Unger studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and then worked as an assistant to Wim Crouwel at Total Design . From 1975 he worked as a freelance graphic designer.

Gerard Unger designed numerous typefaces, some specifically for newspapers such as Swift, Gulliver, Coranto and Vesta. His fonts are distributed through Linotype GmbH and the Dutch Type Library .

As a graphic designer, he designed magazines, coins, books, logos, postage stamps, corporate identities and signage systems (for the Dutch motorways and the Amsterdam subway).

Gerard Unger taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie for more than 30 years and from 1994 was visiting professor at the University of Reading UK at the Institute for Typography and Graphic Communication. In 1979 he taught at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, USA and in 1985 at Stanford University . From 2006 to 2012 he was professor of typography at the Institute of Fine Arts at Leiden University .
