Gerard Verbeke
Gerard Verbeke (also French Gérard Verbeke and occasionally Latin Gerardus Verbeke ; * July 15, 1910 in Waregem ; † March 27, 2001 ) was a Belgian historian of philosophy .
Life
Gerard Verbeke was born to Adolphe Verbeke and ordained a priest on April 28, 1935 . From 1946 to 1978 he was professor of philosophy at the Catholic University in Leuven . He received honorary doctorates in Milan (1975), Washington (1981) and Ireland (1987). At the philosophers 'congress in August 1948 in Mainz, the second philosophers' congress in Germany after 1945, he attempted a metaphysical justification of the truth in his lecture . In 1958 he published Augustine et le stoicisme, a still fundamental essay on the meaning of the Stoa for Augustine . In 1961 he published the first complete edition of a translation by Wilhelm von Moerbeke . His lecture Avicenna, Founder of a New Metaphysics, given in Düsseldorf in 1982, was published in German .
In 1989 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .
