After graduating with a degree in economics , he embarked on a career as a research assistant at the Chair of Economic Theory with Jochen Schumann and at the Institute for Cooperative Studies with Erich Böttcher. In 1970 he also worked as a research assistant at the Bernhard Gahlen chair at the University of Augsburg . 1971 doctorate he attended the University of Münster Dr. rer. pole. He stayed with the University of Augsburg until 1974, now as a research assistant . In 1974 he was appointed to the chair for economics and economics didactics at the University of Education in Westphalia-Lippe (Münster department). The focus of teaching and research here was on economic policy . In 1980, he followed a call to the Institute for Economics and its Didactics in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Münster and finally came to the Institute for Economic Education in the Department of Economics . There he held the Chair of Economics until his retirement in 2008. Between 2000 and 2002 he also acted as managing director of the institute.

Research and Teaching

Projects (selection)

During his work at the Institute for Economic Education, Gerd-Jan Krol led various projects of the EU , the German Federal Environment Foundation and the Federal Environment Agency for environmental education.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the model project “Praxiskontakte Wirtschaft - Wirtschaft im Schule (PRAWIS)” (2000–2004) made a contribution to enabling economics to be chosen as a focus within the framework of the social sciences subject in the upper secondary school.

From 2004 to 2007 Gerd-Jan Krol and Andreas Zoerner headed the “Economic Education / Economy” working group in the joint project of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to create the “Orientation Framework for the Learning Area Global Development in the Framework an education for sustainable development ”.

The Impact of the Bologna Process on Teaching

As part of the Bologna Process , the degree of polyvalence ( openness to effects) was also required with regard to teacher training courses : In the future, two-subject Bachelor students should not only be prepared for a teaching degree- specific Master (Master of Education), but equally for the extracurricular practice or a specialist Master of Science. In order to guarantee this openness of the study objective, the Institute for Economic Education under the leadership of Gerd-Jan Krol and in cooperation with the Institute for Political Science and the Institute for Sociology has developed a special focus model.

The Münster focus model

The Münster focus model was designed by the Institute for Economic Education under the leadership of Gerd-Jan Krol in cooperation with the Institute for Political Science and the Institute for Sociology especially for students who are aiming for a teaching position in integrated subjects such as social sciences . In the case of integrated subjects, there is an increased difficulty in ensuring the polyvalence of the course. Due to the division of the subject into the sub-disciplines (social sciences: politics, economics, sociology) there is too little study contingent on the individual disciplines. In the sub-disciplines, access to corresponding extracurricular fields of work or to an independent specialist master's can no longer be guaranteed.

The Münster focus model enables students of the social sciences teacher training course to focus on one of the three sub-disciplines. In the course of the bachelor's degree, the students can decide whether they want to upgrade the elective area to a purely technical degree by deepening the main subject; this would qualify them both for a specialist master's degree and for the corresponding extracurricular field of work. Or whether they qualify for a Bachelor of Social Sciences by completing the other sub-disciplines, which enables access to a Master of Education in Social Sciences.
