Gerd Billen

Gerd Billen (born March 13, 1955 in Speicher in the Eifel ) is a German nutritionist and consumer advocate. From December 2013 to May 2020 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection .

From 1973 to 1979 Billen studied social , nutritional and household science at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . He then worked as a freelance journalist . Initially, Gerd Billen was press spokesman for the Federal Association of Citizens' Initiatives Environmental Protection (BBU) from 1982 to 1985 , and then from 1985 to 1993 Federal Chairman of the Consumer Initiative. V. From 1993 to 2005 Gerd Billen was the federal manager of the Nature Conservation Union of Germany (NABU) . In 2005 he moved from the Naturschutzbund to the Otto Group as head of the environmental and social policy department. From August 2007 until the end of 2013 he was a member of the board of directors of the German Consumer Association (vzbv) in Berlin.

From December 18, 2013 to May 26, 2020, Billen was a permanent state secretary in the CDU / CSU / SPD government in the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection. Billen is a member of the Bundestag's current opposition party Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen .

Other activities

For many years Gerd Billen was a member and chairman of the Environmental Label Jury . He was on the board of directors of Stiftung Warentest and on the jury of the consumer journalist award of the brand association. To this day he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the White List .
