Gerd Dettmann

Gerd Dettmann (born July 9, 1897 in Schwerin , † February 27, 1943 in Novorossiysk ) was a German art historian and curator at the Focke Museum in Bremen .

Life

Dettmann was a son of the Schwerin drawing teacher Ludwig Dettmann (1856-1937) and his wife Margarete (* 1867). He attended a high school. From 1917 to 1919 he had to serve as a soldier in the First World War . He then studied art history at the Humboldt University of Berlin , the University of Rostock and the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1922. phil. From 1919 to 1926 he was employed at the Mecklenburg State Museum .

In March 1926 Dettmann became an employee at the Focke Museum in Bremen. In 1927 he wrote a museum guide. He also published writings on glass painting , garden sculptures from the 18th century and the stone epitaphs in churches in Bremen. He wrote articles for Thieme-Becker's lexicon of artists and basic monographs on gold and silversmithing in Bremen and on the Ansgariikirche in Bremen . In 1933 he became deputy director of the Focke Museum and in 1939 curator at the museum. He died as a soldier in the USSR in World War II .
