Life
She was a student of Max Slevogt and Emil Orlik , whose master class she became in the early 1920s. She was kindly encouraged by Käthe Kollwitz . The two women exchanged letters until the war. During her travels to Yugoslavia, Italy and especially France, impressions of the landscape emerged.
In 1940 Rotermund was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize by the City of Nuremberg for her work and in 1952 the City of Berlin Art Prize. She had exhibitions in Rome, Paris and several times in Berlin.
On her 80th birthday, a special edition of her 16-sheet etching cycle (1947–1952) De profundis was printed in a 75 edition, which she signed until her death. The same edition initiative brought out the volume “Gerda Rotermund” in 1985 with a catalog of works.
