Manfred-Michael Sackmann (* 1952 in Seesen ) is a German photographer .

Life

Manfred Michael Sackmann grew up in Salzgitter. He started taking photos at the age of 19. He moved to West Berlin in 1975. From 1978 to 1982 he trained at Ulrich Görlich's photography workshop . Since 1992 he has been a member of the Association of Berlin Artists. In 1994 he was appointed to the German Society for Photography (DGPh). Sackmann lives and works in Berlin.

The human being as a cultural and social actor is the predominant theme of Sackmann's work. Outsiders in particular were the focus of his interest early on. Since the late 1970s, photo series of homosexual pubs and "tuna balls" have been made. Documentary series of vernissages and “miss elections” have been added since the 1980s. Sackmann also works in the studio, where he particularly devotes himself to nude and portrait photography. In particular in the 1980s and 1990s, internationally acclaimed portrait series of personalities of contemporary history were created in various collaborations, including Leni Riefenstahl , Joseph Beuys , AR Penck , Helmut Newton , Markus Lüpertz , Andy Warhol , Wolf Vostell , Hans-Olaf Henkel , Klaus Töpfer , Birgit Breuel and Detlev Rohwedder . Sackmann has made numerous photo contributions in various specialist journals and magazines, etc. a. in European Photography , Photography, CULTURE , Der Spiegel , Tip , Zeitmagazin , Zitty and ZOOM . Sackmann's photo documentation on the social effects of the immune deficiency disease AIDS in the 1980s met with great interest.

Reception of non-European art

Since the early 1990s, Sackmann began to deal intensively with the aesthetics of non-European art. Apart from building up an extensive private collection, detailed image documentation was created, particularly on the art of Africa. Cooperation in connection with the reception of non-European cultures arose. a. with the ethnologist Nils Seethaler , the gallery owner Rudolf Springer and the Samurai Art Museum in Berlin.
