Gereon Alter (* 1967 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German Roman Catholic priest and pastor .

After graduating from high school , he studied Catholic theology , first at the universities in Bochum and Innsbruck , then for five years in Rome .

In Rome he lived in the " Germanicum ", a Jesuit college , and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1993, Alter was ordained a priest and has been working in the diocese of Essen , his home diocese , ever since . He worked in Gladbeck , then in Münster and then in Essen . Since autumn 2011 he has been a pastor in the large parish of St. Josef in the Ruhr Peninsula in Essen. The parish currently has six churches . They are in the districts of Burgaltendorf , Byfang , Dilldorf , Heisingen and Überruhr .

Gereon Alter became known nationwide as a spokesperson for the ARD series Das Wort zum Sonntag . He has been part of the speaking team since the beginning of 2010 and can be seen on the program at regular intervals.

On May 5, 2016, he led a television service in the Church of St. Suitbert in Essen-Überruhr, which belongs to his parish.
