Gergely Mark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gergely Márk (born October 27, 1923 in Reghin Sat , Transylvania , Romania ; † November 28, 2012 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian rose breeder who bred several hundred new varieties in five decades, with the focus next to beautiful, fragrant flowers put on winter hardiness and robustness.

Live and act

Gergely Márk learned the gardening trade and after returning from captivity, studied from 1946 to 1950 at the Faculty of Horticulture at the Agricultural University of Gödöllö . After that he was a research assistant at the Research Institute for Agricultural Sciences in Budapest in the ornamental plants department until his retirement in 1981 . From 1962 to 1964 he set up a rosarium in the Budapest district of Budatétény with around 40,000 roses from 2,740 rose varieties on a six-hectare site , one of the largest rose collections of the time, which after the political change of 1989 shrank to two hectares and is now only meager is looked after.

Márk registered 125 of his newly bred varieties. His role model was the rose grower Rudolf Geschwind . Like this one he had the goal of breeding to achieve a good frost hardiness. Almost all of his rose varieties are named after Hungarian or Romanian places, as well as after historical events or famous personalities from both countries.

Essentially, his breeds include hybrid tea , floribunda roses and polyantha roses , i.e. modern bed and shrub roses, with the emphasis on winter hardiness and robustness as well as beautiful flowers with as much fragrance as possible. Some beautiful climbing roses can also be found in the range. His dwarf and mini roses are also worth seeing and are well suited for balconies and patios.

Its most important variety is the Saint Elisabeth Rose , which was awarded a gold medal in Rome. It was dedicated in the 1980s by Gergely Mark to Saint Elisabeth, a Hungarian king's daughter and later Landgrave of Thuringia . Its actual name is "Dedicated to the memory of Saint Elizabeth from the House of Árpád" (Árpád-házi Szent Erzsébet emléke). As part of the planning for the 2010 birthday anniversary of the Duchess Elisabeth of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , the idea arose to dedicate a rose to her for her 500th birthday. The choice fell on Gergely's Rose Heilige Elisabeth.

Other varieties of roses from the breeding Marks are: Abrud , Adolf Kolping emléke , Bolyaiak , Bratislava , Csinszka , Csobanc , Déryné , Egressy Béni emleke , Ernye , Fay Aladar emleke , Feszty Árpád emleke , Ghandi , Gül Baba , Indira , Kaffka Margit , Korpona , Kukk , Lakme , Magyarkanizsa , Máramaros , Marosvecs , Mohács , Nagyhagymás , Noémi , Ond , Papa , plague , Rákóczi Ferenc emléke , rain , Rozalia , emléke Rudolf Geschwind , Ruttkai Éva emléke , Sacra Corona , Szent Gellért emléke , Szent Imre , Szindbád , Tatra , Tokaj , Törökbálint , Tuender Ilona , Tusnàd , Zólyom Park , Zrinyi Ilona emleke .

Gergely Márk published a total of four books. "Die Rose" appeared in 1959 and was also translated into German. But he doesn't describe any of his own roses in it. The last "Magyar rózsák Könyve" (book of Hungarian roses, Mezo gazda Kiadó Verlag Hungary, 112 pp. ISBN 9632861566 ) was published in 2004.
