Rudolf Geschwind

Rudolf Geschwind (born August 29, 1829 in Hředle , Bohemia , † August 30, 1910 in Karpfen , Kingdom of Hungary ) was a rose breeder .

Life

Rudolf Geschwind studied at the mining and forestry academy in Schemnitz . After completing his training in 1852, he worked in various places in Italy , the Ukraine , Hungary, Bohemia and Poland and was most recently the municipal forester in carp.

Rudolf Geschwind began growing roses as a hobby. Between 1860 and 1910 he brought out around 140 mostly hardy rose varieties . His book "Hybridation and Seedling Breeding of Roses" , published in 1886, was the first book on the breeding of new roses in German. It was awarded prizes at the International Horticultural Exhibition in Cologne on the Rhine in 1888 and is still considered a standard work for rose growers today.

Rudolf Geschwind was friends with the rose lover Countess Henriette Chotek - also known as the " Rose Countess " because of her wonderful rosarium at Castle Unterkrupa . After an agreement with Geschwind, she took over a large part of his roses in June 1910, which she had transferred to her rosarium in Unterkrupa . Thus, she posthumously saved a large part of the Geschwind breeds (including the famous 'Northern Landrose') for posterity. Henriette Chotek brought some types of the "Geschwind-Rosen" into the trade after the First World War , which are still popular with experts today and are still available today.

A monument in his honor stands in the Rosarium of the Doblhoffpark in Baden near Vienna , framed by the rose Greetings to Teplitz .

Individual evidence

  1. The agreement was made because Rudolf Geschwind's sons showed no interest in breeding roses and Geschwind wanted to preserve his breeds for posterity.
