Gerhard Buchkremer (born August 22, 1943 in Prien am Chiemsee ) is a German psychiatrist and psychotherapist who headed the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Tübingen until 2009 .

Life

Buchkremer graduated from the German high school in Niederalteich (Old Bavaria) in 1965 . After studying in Berlin and Münster, he passed his medical examination at the University of Münster in 1972 , followed in 1974 with a license to practice medicine and the degree of doctor of medicine with a dissertation on behavioral therapy in chronic schizophrenics .

From 1974 Buchkremer worked as a research assistant in the Clinic for Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Münster, where he was recognized as a specialist in neurology and psychiatry in 1979 and was able to complete his further training in behavior therapy in 1980. In the same year he was appointed senior physician by the director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Münster , Rainer Tölle .

In 1984 Buchkremer completed his habilitation on the subject of "Relapse prevention in schizophrenic patients" and received the Venia legendi for the subject of psychiatry. In 1985 he was appointed professor. In 1989, parallel to his scientific advancement, he was recognized as a supervisor for behavioral therapy by the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. In 1990 Buchkremer succeeded Hans Heimann as director of the Tübingen University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Here he identified himself in particular with the "Tübingen School", the concept of a multi-dimensional psychiatry which, in addition to the organic and psychological components of the disease, keeps an eye on the patient's social environment. One of his first measures was the tearing down of the partially still existing walls around the hospital wards of the Tübingen clinic. The destigmatization of the general social image of an “ insane asylum ” always remained his concern.

research

In his scientific work, Buchkremer concentrated on the evaluation of therapeutic procedures, in particular in the treatment of schizophrenic psychoses and addictions . As one of the first medical scientists in Germany, he began researching the phenomenon of cigarette smoking and the disease tobacco addiction and its treatment in the 1970s, with the support of Rainer Tölle, the then head of the psychiatric clinic at the University of Münster .
