Gerhard Englert

Gerhard Englert (born September 12, 1938 ) is a German physicist and agricultural technician as well as a self-help functionary ( German ILCO ).

Englert received his doctorate in 1969 and qualified as a professor in 1983. Since 1973 he has been at the State Institute for Agricultural Engineering Weihenstephan ( Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture ). Since 1991 he has been a professor at the Chair of Agricultural Systems Technology at the Technical University of Munich .

From 1975 to 2012 Englert was chairman of the Association of Ostomy Carriers (ILCO). He was the initiator of the Fördergemeinschaft Stoma , a working group of ostomy professionals and ostomists and has been its chairman since 1990. As a representative of patient self-help, Englert participated in the program for national health care guidelines and designed measures to improve the quality of patient information . He played an important part in the development of the new concept of “ patient guidelines ” for the translation and interpretation of medical standards by and for patients. Englert was President of the European Ostomy Association ( EOA ) and the IOA (International Ostomy Association) . As IOA president, Englert suggested, among other things, the introduction of an international day of action for ostomate wearers , World Ostomy Day ( October 6th).

In 1998, Englert received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class , and in 2009 the German Medical Association . In “recognition of [his] commitment to cancer patients, for the acceptance of cancer self-help in the health care system and for [his] merits in implementing patient participation in the care system”, the German Cancer Aid awarded him the German Cancer Aid Prize for 2009.
