Gerhard Falkner (malacologist)

Gerhard Falkner (born September 22, 1942 ) is a German mollusc researcher .

Life

Falkner passed his Abitur at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Hamburg.

Falkner works closely with his wife. Among other things, the couple reorganized the Palearctic naiads at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris. In collaboration with Th. EJ Ripken, the Falkner couple compiled the "List de référence des mollusques continentaux de France", which appeared in 2002. From 1984 to 2004 they accompanied the expansion of the Danube as mollusc researchers. The Falkners examined the expansion of the line from St. Koloman to Erding for Deutsche Bahn .

He is co-founder of the working group Check-list of the European Continental Mollusca (CLECOM). He bequeathed his collection of around 10,000 molluscs to the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart .

Scientific achievement

Gerhard Falkner has published more than 150 articles on snails and described several species anew. On his 60th birthday, colleagues named the two French grain snail species Chondrina falkneri and Chondrina gerhardi after him in a commemorative publication .
