Gerhard Hard
Gerhard Hard (born June 12, 1934 ) is a German geographer and university professor who has critically examined the history, methods and objects in German geography and especially landscape geography since the 1960s .
Scientific career
Hard, who studied geography, German language and literature and biology in Saarbrücken and Freiburg im Breisgau, received his doctorate in 1962 with a vegetation-geographic dissertation on "Kalktrifte between Westrich and Metzer Land" and habilitated in 1969 at the University of Bonn with the method-critical study "The 'landscape' of language and the 'landscape' of geographers ”, where he became professor of geography and its didactics in 1970. After he had been a full professor at the Pedagogical University of Rhineland from 1971 , he moved to the University of Osnabrück in 1977, where he held the chair of physical geography until 1999.
Scientific achievements
In a semantic analysis of the term ' landscape ', Gerhard Hard was able to show that this term, which is central to German geography and originated from painting and the aesthetic consideration of a section of space, continues to have a variety of aesthetic connotations. With the evidence that this permeates the scientific work of many geographers, Gerhard Hard has since been regarded by many German geographers as the enfant terrible of the profession. Hard's status within theoretical geography is based on an extremely profound knowledge of the philosophy of language and the analytical philosophy of science, which he applies to the subject of geography and its scientific representatives. From his knowledge as a vegetation geographer , Gerhard Hard extended his criticism to green planning , land maintenance and nature conservation , because these follow the aesthetic conception of the landscape of geography.
He opposed the scientistic use of the concept of landscape in geography. a. based on Stephen Toulmin , Thomas S. Kuhn , Imre Lakatos u. Jerome Ravetz developed landscape studies as folk science, which he developed into evidence science in the sense of Karl-Heinrich Hülbusch . The vegetation is an indication for him, which is why he does not classify the vegetation of a room as a natural phenomenon, but reads it as a trace of human activity. He transferred this approach to urban development, often using unconventional methods.
