Gerhard Helbig (linguist)

Gerhard Helbig (born December 29, 1929 in Leipzig ; † May 29, 2008 ibid) was a German German philologist .

Life

Gerhard Helbig studied between 1948 and 1952 in his hometown of Leipzig. He was a graduate of the courses in German, Philosophy and English . Helbig received his doctorate there in 1953 with the dissertation "Apriorism in German literary studies and ways of overcoming it - an attempt at an epistemological analysis of the methodological status of contemporary literary studies". Since 1957 he has been active in research and teaching in the field of “German as a Foreign Language” and in 1969 he was appointed the first full professor for “German as a Foreign Language”. This was the first chair for this subject in the entire German-speaking area. He held the first professorship for German as a foreign language transferred to him there until his retirement in 1995.

From 1967 to 1995 he was head of the linguistics department at the Herder Institute at Leipzig University . In addition, he served for many years as dean of the local faculty for cultural, linguistic and educational sciences. Helbig also worked as editor-in-chief of the magazine Deutsch als Fremdsprache. He earned his habilitation in German studies at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig with the title of the thesis: "Function and content in language using the example of the pure case of the noun in contemporary German".

Helbig, member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for German Language in Mannheim since 1990 , full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences since 1995 , honored with an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University and the Konrad Duden Prize of the City of Mannheim in 1994 , died on May 29, 2008 78 years old in Leipzig.

Gerhard Helbig published almost 600 works on German linguistics and on the subject of German as a foreign language.
