Epitaph in Naumburg Cathedral

Gerhard II von Goch († May 15, 1422 ) was Bishop of Naumburg from 1409 to 1422 .

Gerhard II came from the Lower Rhine family Vaelbier from the city of Goch , which referred to itself only as von Goch . This extensive family was also respected by the Wettins . Gerhard II's brothers, as well as the generation that preceded his father's brothers, occupied other important spiritual positions. He studied in Prague and has been a canon in Naumburg since 1389 .

Despite the proximity to the Hussites who invaded the country under his successor, Gerhard II was not among the participants in the Council of Constance in 1415, at the time of the conviction of the Czech reformer Jan Hus . Not until 1417 is he suspected of being among those taking part in the council.

epitaph

His epitaph can still be found today in Naumburg Cathedral . It shows the bishop in his official costume with miter , holding the Bible and the crook in his hands. In addition to the coat of arms of the Naumburg diocese, the family coat of arms is also shown as two morning stars crossing each other .
