Ernst Schubert (art historian)

Ernst Schubert (born June 17, 1927 in Halle (Saale) ; † August 4, 2012 in Kreischa ) was a German art historian , historian and epigraphist .

Live and act

Ernst Schubert studied ancient languages and history. In March 1952 he received his doctorate with studies on the Einhard question , in 1954 he went to the department for art history at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. There he was mainly busy with the German inscriptions project. Between 1959 and 1968 he published four volumes, including the inscriptions of the cathedral cities of Naumburg and Merseburg, with which the processing of the inscriptions in Central Germany began. In July 1965 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the donor figures in the Naumburg West Choir ( The West Choir of the Naumburg Cathedral. A contribution to the dating and understanding of the statues ). In 1971 he moved to the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR .

Schubert was involved in numerous important excavations, for example in the women's collegiate church of St. Servatius Quedlinburg, in the cathedrals in Magdeburg, Halberstadt, Naumburg (Saale) and Meißen. The results of these investigations have been published in several monographs and articles, some together with other authors. The main research interests of Schubert were the history of art and the history of Central Germany.

Since 1977 Ernst Schubert has been a member of the cathedral chapter of the United Cathedral Founders of Merseburg, Naumburg and the Zeitz Collegiate Foundation , from 1984 to 2003 as dean . After German reunification in 1990, he made special contributions to the reorganization of the United Cathedral Donors.

Schubert had been a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig since 1991 . In addition, he was the first chairman of the Historical Commission for Saxony-Anhalt, which was re-established in 1990, and was its honorary chairman until his death. He belonged to numerous other scientific societies and bodies.

Ernst Schubert received an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg (Switzerland) , was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2002 and was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt in 2010 .

Ernst Schubert was married and had a daughter.
