The Historical Commission for Saxony-Anhalt is a registered association of scientists and institutions that deal with the regional history of Saxony-Anhalt , both in research and in communication with the public. As such, it corresponds to other regional historical commissions in Germany. It was founded in 1990 and sees itself as the successor to the historical commission for the Prussian province of Saxony, which was founded in 1876 and which Anhalt also joined in 1900 (it existed until the states were dissolved in 1952). Its seat is in Magdeburg .

It currently has 44 members (2016), including many professors from universities, but also from archives and church institutions. It is also open to institutions as members and there is an honorary membership and a corresponding membership. The chairman is Andreas Pečar . Until 2004, the commission was funded directly by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, after that no more (the office had to be closed as a result), but funded mainly through project funding and foundations (because of such funding, the Braunschweig professor of pharmaceutical chemistry Dietrich Moderhack became an honorary member).

Members are or were, among others, Konrad Breitenborn , Enno Bünz (professor for regional history in Leipzig), Werner Freitag (former professor for regional history in Halle-Wittenberg before he left for Münster, then a corresponding member), Stephan Freund , Thomas Großbölting , Hans-Herbert Haase , Josef Hartmann (who played a key role in the founding and was head of the State Archives), Leonhard Helten , Erhard Hirsch , Ulrike Höroldt (head of the Secret State Archive of Prussian Cultural Heritage and until 2015 chair of the commission), Wolfgang Huschner , Peter Johanek , Eva Labouvie , Klaus Krüger , Heiner Lück , Monika Lücke , Ralf Lusiardi , Matthias Meinhardt , Harald Meller (the regional archaeologist), Thomas Müller-Bahlke ( Francke Foundations , from 2015 to 2019 chairman of the commission), Klaus Erich Pollmann , Matthias Puhle , Andreas Ranft , Silke Satjukow , Arno Sames , Wolfgang Schenkluhn , Roderich Schmidt , Werner Schröder , Hans K. Schulze , Ernst Schubert (founding and honorary chairman), Hans-Georg Stephan , Mathias Tullner (professor for regional history in Magdeburg), Patrick Wagner , Matthias Werner , Holger Zaunstöck (professor in Halle-Wittenberg, where he also represents regional history), Walter Zöllner .

They support projects, in particular on source research, such as the continuation of the document book of the Halberstadt Monastery (the first volumes of which were edited by Gustav Schmidt from 1883 to 1889 ) and an annotated facsimile edition of the atlas Cameræ Magdeburgensis by Friedrich August Fiedler (in collaboration with the Landesarchiv and the Landesheimatbund). They also publish the sources and research on the history of Saxony-Anhalt and a yearbook ( Saxony and Anhalt ).

They also host conferences and a national history day .
