Athletic career

From 1948 on, Gerhard John was active in East German first division football in Brieske, Brandenburg. Initially his team was called SG Grube, from 1949 BSG Franz Mehring Marga, from 1950 activist Brieske Ost and from October 1954 SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg . He started in 1948/49 with the SG Grube Marga in the Brandenburg state football class , this season one of the four top divisions in the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) . When the DS-Liga (later GDR-Oberliga ) was founded in 1949 as the highest football league in the SBZ, John was there with the team, now the company sports association (BSG) Franz Mehring Marga. He was used in all 26 games and was called up as a defender. In defense, John played until the end of his league career, which lasted until 1958. For the 1953/54 season he was appointed team captain, and the 1956 season (change to the calendar year rhythm) was his most successful season. He played all league games for the fourth time, scored in the match between SC activist - SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt (3-0) his only league goal and achieved the greatest success in their league time with his team - the runner-up. After the end of the 1958 season, when as a 31-year-old only missed two point games, Gerhard John retired from the league. Within nine seasons he had played 247 championship games in the major league. As a recreational footballer, he was then still active in the fifth-class district class team of BSG Brieske Ost.
