Gerhard Josten

Gerhard Josten (born May 3, 1938 in Duisburg ) is a German chess historian and chess composer from Cologne . He has also worked as a book author in both areas . His current interests are now in literature, art and photography. These hobbies are listed in detail on his website "www.gerhard-josten.de".

Josten did not begin to compose until the age of about 50 and after trying orthodox chess problems he specialized in studies for which he also organizes tournaments. A total of around 150 compositions by him have appeared. In addition to his compositional activity, Gerhard Josten also researches the history of the game of chess . In addition to his books, he also writes articles for chess magazines , for example for Rochade Europa , in which he and Gerd Wilhelm Hörning published the series Calculated: Endgames .

The nature of this position has been well known since the publication by K. Stähle, 464th Deutsche Schachblätter, 1931 . Although both positions are closely related in terms of content, the solution here is a little different:

NONA is a chess club in Tbilisi where many Georgian chess composers, such as Iuri Akobia , Wascha Neidse and Dawit Gurgenidse , meet. It was named after Nona Gaprindashvili .

In 2011 Josten published the novel Alekhine’s Gambit , in which he approaches the unresolved questions about the death of world chess champion Alexander Alekhine in a fictional manner .

Private

Gerhard Josten is married and has a son and two daughters. He used to work professionally building highways . In his spare time he paints oil paintings and watercolors . He also writes many books on different topics.
