Gerhard Klopmeyer (born February 6, 1882 in Altendorf, today Nordhorn , † September 22, 1959 in Nordhorn) was a German registrar and local researcher .

Life

Gerhard Klopmeyer was born in the lock keeper's house of lock II of the south-north canal in Altendorf - Parochie Nordhorn. He first attended elementary school and then the principal school. After graduating from school, he started a commercial apprenticeship in the Stroink weaving mill. He later took up studies at the textile school in Reutlingen and graduated as a textile technician.

On March 1, 1909, he joined the city of Nordhorn as an employee. He was the city's first permanent employee. When he adopted on 24 May 1918 in the civil service, while the city treasurer was appointed and city clerk, he was also their first official for life. Soon after taking up his duties, he was assigned the duties of the registrar, whose duties had always been carried out by the honorary mayor. During the time of the Weimar Republic , City Secretary Klopmeyer represented the interests of wage earners in the 1924–1929 electoral period as a member of the city's self-government. On July 1, 1933, he was retired because he did not want to submit to party politics. But since no municipal employee was able to run the registry office according to regulations, he was asked to continue to do the work on a voluntary basis. He agreed on the condition that the city had to rent appropriate premises in his house. So it happened that the registry office of the city of Nordhorn was housed in a private house until the end of the war in 1945.

On April 1, 1937, Klopmeyer was called back to active civil service. After the end of the Second World War , he was deputy city director from June 15, 1947 to June 3, 1948, heading the city administration. At his request, he was employed beyond the age of 65 and did not retire until March 1, 1949, after completing 40 years of service.

From 1925 to 1959, Klopmeyer was chairman of the Schützenverein Frensdorf e. V. 1906 .

Local history

After retiring from active service in the city administration, Klopmeyer looked after the Nordhorn city archive for a few years . The files were badly damaged in 1946 in the basement of the old town hall on Hauptstrasse by a flood that flooded the entire city center. The documents that had been dried in the state archive in Osnabrück had to be sorted and processed again in painstaking detail . This work offered him a wide range of insights into old historical events and contexts. He used this knowledge for numerous articles that were published in the local press and in publications of the Heimatverein Grafschaft Bentheim.
