Gerhard May (theologian)

Gerhard Johannes Friedrich May (born November 7, 1940 in Cilli ( Celje ); † August 8, 2007 in Vienna ) was Professor of Church History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . His research focus was on patristics .

Live and act

Born the son of the pastor of the same name, Gerhard May, in Lower Styria in what was then Yugoslavia (now Slovenia), May grew up in Vienna, where his father had been bishop of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Austria since 1944 . After studying Protestant theology in Vienna, Heidelberg and Basel , he was in 1964 with a thesis on Gregory of Nyssa to Dr. theol. did his doctorate and habilitation in 1972 in Munich . From 1979 until his retirement in 2005 he held the chair for ancient church history in Mainz. From 1994 to 2004 he was also director of the Department of Western Religious History at the Institute for European History (Mainz) . May was buried in his father's grave in the Baumgartner Friedhof (group E1, number 97) in Vienna.
