Gerhard Neuerburg

Gerhard Neuerburg (born February 22, 1872 in Trier , † October 10, 1946 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter.

Life

Gerhard Neuerburg was the oldest child of a total of eleven children of the tailor Philipp Neuerburg (* 1842 in Trier; † 1902 ibid.) And his first wife Angela, née Caspari (* 1840 in Trier). Neuerburg first trained as a church painter with Heinrich Steffgen in Trier and was involved in painting and restoration work in churches in the area, from 1898 in Cologne. In 1898 he married Henriette Maria Sophia Horstmann from Haldem (now part of Stemwede ). With financial support from the mine owner Friedrich Schuerenberg, the husband of his sister Angelika, he studied at the Royal Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1909 to 1914 , most recently as a master student with Eduard von Gebhardt , who now has his own studio in the academy. In 1913 he successfully took part in a portrait competition under Professor Willy Spatz .

From 1914 to 1918 he did military service as a Landsturmmann in the sailor artillery (coastal artillery) in Wilhelmshaven , but was able to work in a studio in Wilhelmshaven-Rüstringen, where he worked as a portrait and marine painter. He received orders for portraits, etc. a. that of the admirals Reinhard Scheer and Franz von Hipper , Günther von Krosigk , Johannes Hartog , Siegfried Engel , Ernst Oldwig von Natzmer , Hugo von Pohl , Gustav Bachmann , Nikolaus Graf zu Dohna-Schlodien , as well as officers and crews of the ships in Wilhelmshaven as well of Grand Admiral Prince Heinrich of Prussia (1862–1929), brother, and Prince Adalbert of Prussia , son of Emperor Wilhelm II.

In November 1919 he was represented with portraits in the Christmas exhibition of the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, and in 1925 in the art exhibition in Düsseldorf. In the 1920s and 1930s he primarily devoted himself to landscape painting with motifs from the area around Düsseldorf, the Ahr valley , the Rhine valley around the Siebengebirge and near Koblenz , in the Eifel and on the Moselle . In 1926 he created a series of paintings by the August-Thyssen-Hütte and the United Steelworks in Duisburg- Hamburg.
