Gerhard Pfanzelter

Gerhard Pfanzelter (* 1943 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian diplomat . From September 7, 1999 to the end of November 2008, he acted as the permanent representative of Austria to the United Nations in New York.

Life

Among other things, he was Vice-President of ECOSOC in 2000 and Vice-President of the 57th General Assembly of the United Nations in 2002  . During the first half of 2006, he served as the President of the EU in New York City . He then led the campaign for Austria to have a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2009-2010.

Before that, he was ambassador to Senegal , Gambia , Cape Verde , Guinea-Bissau , Mali , Guinea , Mauritania and Syria . From 1993 to 1999 he was head of the department for international organizations in the Austrian Foreign Ministry .

Ambassador Gerhard Pfanzelter has been the longest serving Austrian ambassador to the United Nations. From 2010 to 2012 Ambassador Pfanzelter was Secretary General of the Central European Initiative (ZEI) based in Trieste.

Gerhard Pfanzelter is a member of the board of the non-partisan Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations (ÖGAVN).
