Athletic career

As a player in the Dynamo Dresden junior team , Gerhard Polz was appointed to the squad of the GDR junior national team in early 1962 . With her he played two international matches in February and April 1962, in which he was called up as a striker. In the 1962/63 season, Polz came to a deployment in the league team of Dynamo Dresden at the age of 19. In the encounter on the 22nd match day Motor Zwickau - Dynamo Dresden (2-1) he was used as a half-right striker. Dynamo ended the season as relegated and entered the second-rate GDR league in 1963/64 . Polz played 14 of the 30 matches played and scored one goal. The Dresden managed the immediate return to the league, but Polz was nominated for the 2nd team, which was represented in the fourth-class district class. It was not until the 1965/66 season that he made two more appearances in the major league. Due to the failure of the regular striker Erich Siede , he took over his position on the 10th and 13th matchday. In 1966, Polz rose to the third-class district league of Dresden with Dynamo II . After two district runners-up championships, the 2nd team with Gerhard Polz became district champion in 1970 and rose to the GDR league. However, Polz left Dynamo Dresden in the summer of 1970 and moved to the district division Wismut Pirna-Copitz . With him he was again runner-up, and second place was enough for Wismut to rise to the GDR league, which had been expanded to five seasons from 1971/72. In the following two GDR league seasons Polz came to 18 appearances in 22 point games and scored five and two goals. In 1973, the bismuth team had to relegate from the GDR league, which meant that the 29-year-old finally said goodbye to higher-class football.
