Gerhard Räbiger

Fritz Otto Gerhard Räbiger (born July 9, 1916 in Grünberg in Silesia , † April 27, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German fireworker and police officer.

Life

Gerhard Räbiger grew up in Grünberg in Silesia. After finishing school he did an apprenticeship as a moulder in an iron foundry.

In 1938 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . In 1939 he took part in the campaign against Poland , in 1940 against France , in 1941 against Russia . In July 1941 he received his first wound, after which his right arm remained stiff in the elbow joint .

After the end of the Second World War , Räbiger worked in Berlin as the first chief police fireworker with the rank of chief inspector. During his 31 years of service, he defused around 6,500 bombs. Among other things, in February 1961 a 20-hundredweight air mine in Berlin-Moabit , a 10-hundredweight bomb in Berlin-Steglitz , five Russian grenades from the tower of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church . Its longest deployment lasted 23 hours: in Lindenstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg there was a bomb with a long detonator on the main power line.

In May 1952, Räbiger received the Federal Cross of Merit for his work . On June 5, 1958, he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

family

Gerhard Räbiger had two younger brothers, the older of whom died in Russia in 1943 during World War II. The younger one, Fritz Räbiger, is one of the inventors of the sleeper replacement carrier method .

Räbiger was married and had two children.
