Gerhard Schmatz

Gerhard Schmatz (born June 5, 1929 in Regensburg ; † March 28, 2005 in Ulm ) was a mountaineer and notary .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1949, Schmatz studied law at the University of Erlangen . After two predicate exams, he was accepted into the Bavarian notary service. From 1962 to 1994 he ran a notary's office in Neu-Ulm with a partner . After his retirement from 1994 to 2004 he volunteered for the Free Voters in the Ulm City Council. He was a member of the Kösener Corps Bavaria Erlangen and Borussia Berlin .

After three North Americans, Schmatz was the first European on the 7 Summits and then as the first person in the world to be on the highest mountains of the seven largest islands on earth (7 + 7 Summits). Schmatz was not only known as a high-altitude alpinist, he also completed ski tours to the North Pole and sailed around Cape Horn several times .

In 1979 Schmatz climbed the summit of Mount Everest as an expedition leader. At the time, at 50, he was the oldest person to have made it to the top. His wife Hannelore Schmatz also climbed from the Südsattel to the summit the following day and was the first German to stand on the summit of Mount Everest. Hannelore Schmatz died of exhaustion on October 2, 1979 while descending at an altitude of 8,300  m , shortly after seeing her climbing partner, the American Ray Genet , die of exhaustion.
