Gerhard Steger (born October 14, 1957 in Wiener Neustadt ) was head of the budget section in the Ministry of Finance from 1997 to 2014 and head of the finance / participations section in the Austrian Court of Audit .

Life

Steger studied political science . He is a member of the SPÖ and was chairman of the Christianity and Socialism Working Group of his party.

Under Federal Minister Herbert Salcher , he was a consultant in the office of the Federal Minister of Health from 1980 to 1981 and from 1981 to 1983 a consultant in the office of the Federal Minister of Finance . In 1984 he switched to a freelance scientific activity. After returning to the Federal Ministry of Finance in 1986, he was a consultant in the economics department and the budget department for agriculture and forestry until 1991, from 1991 to 1997 he was head of the budget department for agriculture and forestry in the Federal Ministry of Finance and from 1997 to 2014 head the budget section, responsible for the general budget of the government. He was chairman of the OECDWorking Party of Senior Budget Officials (SBO). In this function he advocated a consolidation and expenditure-side restructuring of the budget as well as a rejection of new debts. He also played a key role in shaping the federal budget reform. This enables the upper limits for spending to be fixed over a number of years with leeway for those areas that are subject to economic fluctuations - and with the option for the heads of department to build up reserves and spend the money later.

In April 2014 he moved to the Court of Auditors as head of the Finance / Financial Equalization / Participations / EU section. In June 2016 he was nominated by the SPÖ and the Stronach team for the post of President of the Court of Auditors . After Margit Kraker was elected to succeed Josef Moser , President of the Court of Auditors , Steger resigned from the public service and wanted to become self-employed as a consultant for public financial management with a focus on the international area from September.
