Gerhard Stein (diplomat)
Gerhard Stein (born November 28, 1922 in Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. , † January 19, 1987 ) was a German diplomat . He was the GDR's ambassador to several countries in southern Africa .
Life
Stein did military service in the Wehrmacht from 1941 and was taken prisoner by the Americans . After the war ended, he joined the SED in 1946 . Between 1946 and 1960 he was a teacher and later director of an EOS . He completed a distance learning course at the Pedagogical University in Potsdam .
From 1960 he was a member of the diplomatic service of the GDR and an employee in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR . From 1964 he worked as second secretary or counselor at the GDR embassy in Zanzibar , and from 1965 as the acting head of the GDR consulate general in Zanzibar. He later worked at GDR representations in Egypt , Tanzania and Guinea . From 1974 to 1979 he was ambassador of the GDR in Zambia , from May 1977 additionally in Lesotho and from October 1977 additionally accredited in Botswana .
